Halloween is the traditional kid’s holiday which is pure fun. The kids are all spiffed out in their favorite character costume, ready with a Halloween goodie bag to gather up a bunch of treats. But what about the family dog? The well behaved woofer deserves to join in the fun, going house to house, standing guard on the sidewalk with Mom or Dad as the kids scamper up to the door to receive their treats.
dog costumeNaturally, your dog should wear some sort of a doggie costume too. Now, you may think, “What? Another costume to pull together?” However, dog Halloween costumes are so easy to put together … your puppy isn’t nearly so particular as the kids, about his or her costume! Here we’ve got some easy ways for your pooch to be a neighborhood Halloween sensation.
Ghost Dog
Boo! Yes, the ghost dog makes Woofie feel like he’s the most impressive dog on the Halloween circuit. This Halloween dog costume requires an old white sheet, some day-glow stickers and a strip of cloth, decorated with glitter and then wrapped around his regular collar. Use pinking shears to cut the hem a few inches above the ground all around. With a glitter marker, write an enormous ‘BOO!” on a piece of heavy weight paper, to hang around his neck. And presto, it’s the terrifying ghost dog!
Poodle Wanna-be
If your dog’s not a Poodle, then she can be one for Halloween. Gather lengths of white yarn into fluffy loops, stitch the loops in place by sewing machine. Then attach to a dog head band, a pom-pom on the end of the tail, and poufy anklets – for a well groomed Poodle. This dog Halloween costume always looks hilarious, and makes everybody giggle, from kids to grownups. This works really well, especially on larger non-cutsie breeds!
KittyCat Canine
Most dogs like to chase cats. Do why not dress Rover up like a cute little kitty for Halloween. The neighborhood cats won’t be fooled, but your dog will never know he’s kitty-for-a-day. Another attention-getting crazy dog costume!

Doggie DressUp

Here’s another simple costume that dogs enjoy as much as their human companions: buy a cheap wig and streak it with a radical lime green, fire engine red or cool blue kit with spray-on hair color. Attach to your dog’s head with elastic, tied on like a bonnet, along with a pair of over-sized sunglasses (tied on behind the ears). Some dogs will try to remove this costume, but most woofers are big show offs, so it’s worth a shot.

Princess

Most dogs don’t mind being fitted with some of the kid’s old tees or even dresses. Add a tiara or hat and doll jewelry (pop-beads are good), as appropriate and your dog will feel like a million bucks come Halloween. Cinderella never felt better!

If you’ve never tried putting lipstick on a dog, you’re missing out on the funniest experience ever. Of course, you won’t want to use yours! Just get a cheap tube of lipstick for $1.00 in the cosmetics section. Even if puppy licks it off in short order, your kids will love the effect!

Another bonus for a dogs Halloween costume is that the dressed up dog may get a few extra treats tossed in the kid’s bags, by entertained people handing out treats on Halloween night.

Remember to pick up a box of yummy dog biscuits, so your dog doesn’t eat any of the (toxic) kid’s candy. You need to reward your party dog at evening’s end with real dog goodies!

rock starThe fun of celebrating Halloween has long been a favorite of children, so why not Halloween costumes for dogs too! In recent years adults too have joined in on the celebration of this holiday. When it comes to spending money to decorate it has become second only to Christmas.bumble beeThis new aspect for this holiday is the tradition of dressing one’s dog in costume to go with the theme of the whole family. Some pet owners make their own costumes for their dogs out of ordinary household items such as old shirts, hats, bandanas, and socks; while others purchase ready-made costumes.'horse' & jockeyPet stores as well as costume shops, online stores, and even discount retailers routinely carry dog costumes of the simple variety all the way up to really fabulous elaborate ones. The price of these costumes also varies greatly.

  • How much do you want to spend?
  • Will your dog actually wear it?
  • Is the outfit going to be comfortable?
  • Is it easy to get on and off?
  • Is your dog just the cutest thing ever?

Halloween can be stressful enough for your pet with children and adults walking up and down the street and ringing doorbells, so the addition of a costume might too much for your dog to handle. He might get confused, scared, or aggressive. Take care that all the commotion isn’t too stressful.

Keep a calm positive attitude, and your dog will follow your lead.
Remember – Lots of ‘happy talk’ and treats!
Check to make sure that the costume for your dog isn’t too tight or irritating. Simplicity is really the best way to go. A simple cape made from an old scarf you have at home or a bandana around the neck to be a cowboy is cute yet simple. This is especialy effective for large dog Halloween costumes.  They don’t mind a bit!
Enjoy Halloween and let your dog do the same!

Doggie DressUp

dog bumblebeeHalloween costumes for dogs are fun and most dogs love feeling included in the festivities. When purchasing or making a costume for your dog, make sure it’s the right size and doesn’t restrict his movement, breathing, or vision.

dog witchAlso make sure it’s not too warm, or not warm enough if you’ll be outside. Get the outfit early and give your dog plenty of time to acclimate to it. If he seems hesitant offer treats and praise so he knows the costume is a good thing and will get him attention.
Some dogs will not tolerate a costume, don’t force him to wear it if he really doesn’t want to. Halloween is supposed to be a time for fun. If your dog doesn’t want anything on his head consider something simpler such as a sweater with a skeleton pattern or pet safe hair dye.
Some dogs may get nervous when they see people dressed in costumes. If your pet seems distressed it’s better to leave him at home.
Also remember that many types of candy and treats are bad for dogs. Sticky candy can rot his teeth, crunchy candy could hurt his gums, and dark and milk chocolate is highly toxic to dogs. Make sure to keep an eye out for children who do not know this and may try to sneak him a treat.
Consider bringing along your own bag of appropriate doggie snacks so that friends and strangers can give him without worry.
Always remember that it’s important to pick up after your dog promptly in public places or other peoples homes. Make sure you set a good example of responsible pet ownership so you’ll be welcome at festivities again.
A Halloween costume for dogs is sure to make everybody smile and be happy.  Keep these simple guidelines in mind, and you and your dog will have a grrrreat Halloween!
